Richard Nugent | Head of IP Strategy
Richard has over 20 years’ experience working within multinational corporate environments and the research sector. He has worked with businesses from all sectors and is comfortable addressing complex subject matter. At Mathys & Squire Consulting, Richard delivers a range of intellectual property services, including intangible asset audits, competitor analysis, IP strategy, IP management, IP search, IP training (multiple topics) and contracts consulting.
Since 2016, Richard has been a volunteer instructor on the PraxisAuril Research Contracts course. He has delivered IP training internationally at top Universities in England, Northern Ireland, Brazil and China. He has also spoken on numerous occasions to conference audiences in UK, Brazil, Germany, China, Russia and South Africa. Recently, Richard contributed to an EPO event in Dublin, Ireland. With his background in law and experience working with a wide range of technology companies and research organisations, Richard enjoys advising and training those working in the cutting edge of innovation. He is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and speaks moderate Brazilian Portuguese and French, as well as a small amount of Mandarin.
After completing his BA degree (focused on French and European Studies) and roles as a financial advisor, and in the government and charity sectors, Richard undertook a master’s degree and later a law degree at Queens University Belfast. While studying, he worked within the Northern Ireland Courts Service. He subsequently worked in an in-house legal role for the UK subsidiary of Groupe Axor Inc, where he negotiated the contracts required for the building of Belfast City Airport. In 2002, Richard moved to the south of England, working in the legal teams of Canon and Orange. From 2007-2015, he worked as an IP and Contracts Manager at Rothamsted Research – a top UK agricultural research organisation. He later worked for Queen’s University Belfast, where his role focused on Contracts before moving to Mathys & Squire Consulting Ltd in 2018. Richard has operated his own micro-company for 20 years.

Lawrence Bickers | Business Consultant
Lawrence is an experienced IP expert. He also has experience as an IP Portfolio manager and has been responsible for many successful IP monetization programmes.He joined Mathys & Squire Consulting in 2012 and in 2017 was appointed Managing Director and then Chairman in 2018. Following the acquisition by Mathys and Squire in 2018, he now acts as Managing Director. Lawrence was previously responsible for the operations of the Intellectual Property (IP) Group within Coller Capita from 2007, with a focus on the technical due diligence and IP acquisitions. He managed a multidiscipline team of internal and external resources based in Europe and the USA generating 50+ million $US from IP.
Lawrence was also Vice President of European Partnerships at IPvalue with responsibility for the European business (2003 -2007) and Head of Licensing at British Telecom (1999- 2003), where he pioneered the first exploitation programme with Goldman Sachs, Boston Consulting and General Atlantic Fund. Creating the company IPvalue. Lawrence has a background in Research and Development with BT where he worked on the development of the first transatlantic submarine cables specialising in the design of high-power laser transmitters. He later was responsible for the capital investment in BT’s Access network, with budget responsibility for a $1bn/ annum capital investment programme and a department of 600 people.
As head of IP Exploitation at BT Exact, he established the company mining program, portfolio management valuations, outsourcing contracts and resulting revenue streams for its intellectual assets. Lawrence has recently been training large corporates in Asia on IP Valuations, he has published 5 patents and over 50 technical papers and has held visiting Professorships at Manchester Metropolitan University. He also sat on Industrial Advisory Board for Bangor University.
