Brian More for Dublin IP and R&D Summiy

Dr. Brian More | CEO

Brian is an experienced Intellectual Property Director, technology transfer and business growth consultant with a demonstrated history of delivering value to businesses through intangible asset management. An enthusiastic professional skilled in IP Valuation, Negotiation, Business Planning, Innovation Management, Analytical Skills, and Coaching.Brian was awarded the 2009 Lord Strafford Technology Transfer Champion Award for work in Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, and Japan. Brian has overseen the scaleup of manufacturing businesses through research, development and full-scale commercial production and worked extensively with the venture capital sector on early-stage funds. Brian has worked on multi-million-pound IP valuations for Guernsey-based wealth management companies and helped businesses in the UK and North America looking to raise capital on their IP assets, resulting in investments of over £150 million.

 

He is passionate about the use of IP as a business asset and was the founder of the UKIPO Master Class on IP, designed to up-skill business advisors on the commercial aspects of IP. He has taught over 600 business advisors and company executives and works closely with the banking sector on recognising the true value of intangible assets as security backing for loan or investment deals. Brian is currently advising the European Commission on equity fund management and investment into healthcare-related technology and is a consultant to the Malaysian Government in technology transfer best practice, including the strategic management of intangible assets within the HEI sector. Brian holds a DPhil in nuclear spectroscopy physics from Sussex University (1986), a BSc in physics from the University of Stirling (1981) and an MBA from Coventry University (2008). Brian has been responsible for starting 25 companies, including Europe’s largest AIM-listed consumer product business for safety products.

Richard Nugent | Business Consultant

Richard has over 20 years’ experience working within multinational corporate environments and the research sector. He has worked with businesses from all sectors and is comfortable addressing complex subject matter. At Mathys & Squire Consulting, Richard delivers a range of intellectual property services, including intangible asset audits, competitor analysis, IP strategy, IP management, IP search, IP training (multiple topics) and contracts consulting.

Since 2016, Richard has been a volunteer instructor on the PraxisAuril Research Contracts course. He has delivered IP training internationally at top Universities in England, Northern Ireland, Brazil and China. He has also spoken on numerous occasions to conference audiences in UK, Brazil, Germany, China, Russia and South Africa. Recently, Richard contributed to an EPO event in Dublin, Ireland. With his background in law and experience working with a wide range of technology companies and research organisations, Richard enjoys advising and training those working in the cutting edge of innovation. He is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and speaks moderate Brazilian Portuguese and French, as well as a small amount of Mandarin.

After completing his BA degree (focused on French and European Studies) and roles as a financial advisor, and in the government and charity sectors, Richard undertook a master’s degree and later a law degree at Queens University Belfast. While studying, he worked within the Northern Ireland Courts Service. He subsequently worked in an in-house legal role for the UK subsidiary of Groupe Axor Inc, where he negotiated the contracts required for the building of Belfast City Airport. In 2002, Richard moved to the south of England, working in the legal teams of Canon and Orange. From 2007-2015, he worked as an IP and Contracts Manager at Rothamsted Research – a top UK agricultural research organisation. He later worked for Queen’s University Belfast, where his role focused on Contracts before moving to Mathys & Squire Consulting Ltd in 2018. Richard has operated his own micro-company for 20 years.
