Head of IP Strategy
Richard has over 20 years’ experience working within multinational corporate environments and the research sector. He has worked with businesses from all sectors and is comfortable addressing complex subject matter. At Coller IP, Richard delivers a range of intellectual property services, including intangible asset audits, competitor analysis, IP strategy, IP management, IP search, IP training (multiple topics) and contracts consulting.
Since 2016, Richard has been a volunteer instructor on the PraxisAuril Research Contracts course. He has delivered IP training internationally at top Universities in England, Northern Ireland, Brazil and China. He has also spoken on numerous occasions to conference audiences in UK, Brazil, Germany, China, Russia and South Africa. Recently, Richard contributed to an EPO event in Dublin, Ireland. With his background in law and experience working with a wide range of technology companies and research organisations, Richard enjoys advising and training those working in the cutting edge of innovation. He is based in Belfast, Northern Ireland and speaks moderate Brazilian Portuguese and French, as well as a small amount of Mandarin.
After completing his BA degree (focused on French and European Studies) and roles as a financial advisor, and in the government and charity sectors, Richard undertook a master’s degree and later a law degree at Queens University Belfast. While studying, he worked within the Northern Ireland Courts Service. He subsequently worked in an in-house legal role for the UK subsidiary of Groupe Axor Inc, where he negotiated the contracts required for the building of Belfast City Airport. In 2002, Richard moved to the south of England, working in the legal teams of Canon and Orange. From 2007-2015, he worked as an IP and Contracts Manager at Rothamsted Research – a top UK agricultural research organisation. He later worked for Queen’s University Belfast, where his role focused on Contracts before moving to Coller IP in 2018. Richard has operated his own micro-company for 20 years.
Dr. Anthony Coleman
Anthony has over eight years’ experience in intellectual property, specifically relating to the valuation of IP for M&A, licensing and investment purposes; patent portfolio review; patent/technology landscaping; competitor analysis; and IP scouting. He has provided IP valuation training in Turkey to corporate clients and TTOs, as well as speaking at events in Turkey and Thailand on IP licensing and valuation.
Anthony has broad experience in both the corporate and academic sectors across Europe. He has gained substantial experience working with clients across multiple sectors and industries including lighting, optoelectronics, polymers (production processes and chemistry), automotive, aerospace, energy, FMCG, agriculture & agro-chemical, as well as medical devices.
In his previous role working for CPA Global as a technical consultant, Anthony gained experience in IP due diligence, technology landscaping, IP scouting and IP strategy for businesses across multiple industries including petrochemicals, polymers, aerospace, automotive, medical devices and energy, assisting these clients in better aligning their IP strategy with their business development and R&D efforts.
Anthony has also worked as an IP consultant for Philips in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, working closely with Philips Research, in projects including portfolio management and strategy in monitoring competitor activity through patent landscaping, aligning research and IP filing strategies and investigating IP acquisition or licensing targets.
He holds BSc in Chemistry with German from DCU, Ireland and a PhD in Organometallic photochemistry from DCU. Anthony has completed post-doctoral research on ‘smart’ materials with Nobel Laureate Prof. Ben Feringa in the University of Groningen, the Netherlands.
